Construction & Contractor Insurance FAQs
Q What insurance do contractors need?
At minimum, most contractors need general liability insurance and commercial auto insurance. If you have employees, you'll also need workers' compensation. Depending on your trade and the projects you work on, you may also need tools coverage, builder's risk, surety bonds, or umbrella insurance.
Q How much does contractor insurance cost?
Q Do subcontractors need their own insurance?
Yes. Most general contractors require subcontractors to carry their own general liability and workers' comp insurance before working on a project. You'll typically need to provide a certificate of insurance (COI) as proof.
Q What does general liability insurance cover for contractors?
General liability covers third-party bodily injury and property damage claims. For example, if a client trips over your equipment or you accidentally damage their property, GL covers the claim. It also covers completed operations, claims that arise after you've finished a job.
Q Is workers' comp required for contractors?
In most states, yes, if you have employees. Requirements vary by state and sometimes by the number of employees. Even if not legally required, many GCs require subs to carry workers' comp before they can work on a project.
Q Do you insure new contractors?
Yes. We work with contractors at all stages, including those just starting out. Some carriers specialize in new ventures and can provide competitive coverage even without years of experience.
